3. Brainstorming Techniques

Brainstorming is about seeking out new ideas and capturing their essence in the moment. It’s about taking what you already have and exploring new ways to expand. Effective brainstorming should draw out all the ideas no matter how crazy or unusual or mundane. One idea sparks another. One contributor builds off another’s idea. An analyst shares an interesting discovery that inspires more content. No idea is too big or too small. No idea is judged or dismissed at this phase. Brainstorming techniques allow you to capture a full range of ideas that can be evaluated and ranked later.

Be alert that this is an area of content planning where you might be tempted to skip ahead. Grownups have often forgotten the fourth grade joy of asking questions. Open-ended wonder questions don’t get the attention they deserve when we get swept up in the busyness of a work day. To inspire participation, brainstorming sessions have to be fun, lively, and time-bound. Ask your participants to commit to the process. Who knows what will appear?
